Symposium
Speakers include: Professor Prosterman, who will make opening remarks and introduce the speakers; Alan Wallach, Ralph H. Wark Professor of Art and Art History, and professor and chair of American Studies, the College of William and Mary; Steven Newsome, Director, Anacostia Museum and Head of the Center for African-American History & Culture; and Preminda Jacob, assistant professor of art history, UMBC, who will serve as the discussant.
Drawn from the Albin O. Kuhn Library's extensive Photography Collections, "Framing the Exhibition" comprises a selection of photographs whose innovative installation will create an opportunity to explore the conscious role the museum plays in the interpretation of cultural objects. Organized by the Library Gallery, with Leslie Prosterman, Associate Professor, American Studies Department, UMBC as guest curator, the exhibition questions the varied assumptions and narratives embedded in exhibitions which can influence how viewers interpret and understand objects.
An illustrated catalog with interpretive essays will accompany the exhibition.
"Framing the Exhibition" has been supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council, the Baltimore County Commission on Arts & Sciences, the Friends of the Library & Gallery, and the Chesapeake Chapter for the American Studies Association. At UMBC support has come from the Offices of the Provost and the Dean of Arts & Humanities; The Humanities Center; and the departments of History, Ancient Studies, and American Studies, and Visual Studies.
